The 1550nm wavelength is ideal for 40km fiber optic transmission primarily due to its lower attenuation in standard single-mode fiber (SMF). At approximately 0.2 dB/km, its signal loss is significantly less than the 0.35 dB/km experienced at 1310nm. This reduced attenuation over long distances ensures superior signal integrity, transmission efficiency, and minimizes degradation. Furthermore, 1550nm offers higher transmission stability for extended links like 40km, experiencing manageable dispersion effects that support reliable performance, unlike the higher attenuation-limited 1310nm over such distances.

Key differences distinguish 1550nm and 1310nm: 1550nm provides lower attenuation (~0.2 dB/km) enabling distances of 40km+, while 1310nm has higher attenuation (~0.35 dB/km) limiting it typically to 10-20km.
