Overview of AOC (Active Optical Cable)
An AOC (Active Optical Cable) is a high-speed data transmission cable that combines optical modules and fiber optic cables into a single integrated unit. It mainly consists of fiber optic cables, optical transmit and receive components, and control circuits. The fiber optic cables are responsible for carrying the optical signals, the optical transmitters convert electrical signals into optical signals, the receivers convert optical signals back into electrical signals, and the control circuits coordinate the work of the optical modules to ensure stable data transmission.
Difference Between AOC and DAC (Direct Attach Copper) Cables
DAC (Direct Attach Copper) Cables rely on copper cables to transmit electrical signals, while AOC uses optical signals for data transmission. There are a few key differences:
Transmission Distance: AOC cables typically offer longer transmission distances than DAC cables, making them suitable for long-distance data transmission.
Signal Attenuation: AOC cables are less affected by external electromagnetic interference and have lower signal attenuation, providing more stable transmission performance.
AOC Cable Construction
The cable used in an AOC is not the same as a standard optical fiber patch cable. Although both use fiber optic technology, AOC cables integrate active components, making them a complete data transmission system. Regular optical fiber patch cables only serve as physical connections for light transmission and lack signal conversion and processing capabilities. AOC cables use special fiber materials that are designed to support the active components, ensuring low loss and high stability during the transmission of optical signals.
